There have been lots of WWII films, but Harris Done's documentary War Dogs of the Pacific may be one of a kind. The canines seen in the film were retrained family dogs that were paired with handlers, and initially scoffed at by soldiers. But then the dogs started to save hundreds of lives by sniffing out hidden sniper nests and sounding the alarm about encroaching enemies. Those same scoffing soldiers were soon clamoring to sleep near the dogs, so as to be warned of nighttime ambushes. The film is filled with historical footage of the handlers, dogs and the soldiers they served alongside, with many never-before-seen photos. Director Done and members of the Lackland Air Force Base 341st Military Working Dogs Unit will be in attendance today when War Dogs makes its Houston premiere as part of the RealFilm screening series.
